So it’s a month into 2010. I take a look at myself and realise I’m out of shape... I’m about a stone overweight, I’ve got a pair of pert moobs, a little beer belly, love handles and my jaw-line has gone.
Granted I’ve not been as active due to an injury, but then I’ve not helped the situation by eating lots of curry, chinese, kettle chips and drinking too much ale.
I’m told by my Doctors that my injury is fixed and this is my catalyst to change.
So I decide I’m getting rid of the flab and commit to 3 months of healthy eating and exercise.
How did I do?
I succeeded, going from 12 stone to 11 stone in 12 weeks, moobs have gone, jaw line is back and I feel pretty f*cking good.
So how did I do it?
1) Exercise.
Well I tried to do 3-6 hour long gym sessions per week. Typically doing around 20 minutes cardiovascular (CV) work and 40 minutes on resistance equipment.
In addition to this, on the days I didn’t go to the gym I’d try to do some sort of exercise for at least 30 minutes, for example I’d get up early and swim 30 lengths in the pool, or I’d go for a bike ride or a brisk walk.
If you’re saying “I haven’t got time for that...” you’re lying. It’s a few hours out of a 168 hour week. Get up an hour earlier you lazy f*cker.
2) Diet.
So here’s where people start saying “ohhh I can’t give up XXX”. But believe me you can. You just stop consuming it, it’s that simple, it’s not smack! So here’s what I banned myself from eating and drinking:
- Alcohol
- Fizzy Soft-drinks (even diet ones)
- Crisps and Chips
- Chocolate and Sweets
- Fried food
I snacked on fruit and nuts and made sure I had a really solid breakfast, normally porridge with almonds, blueberries, banana and honey.
The rest is just common sense, healthy eating, fresh fish, steamed vegetables, no fried food, salads and drink lots of water.
You need to do a combination of both the diet and the exercise, one without the other will simply mean you’re not going to get any fatter, but you won’t lose weight.
Conclusion.
That is it... not rocket science and within everyone’s reach. And if I hear anyone say “you only live once, enjoy yourself”, I’ll agree but then are you really ‘enjoying yourself’ by eating/drinking excessively and waking up bloated with a hangover? Take it from me I got much more enjoyment out of the change of lifestyle and feeling healthy.
Start today, don’t say, “well I’ll just get this weekend out of the way”, as there’ll always be something that’ll stop you doing it, a get together, a weekend away, a stag/hen do etc.
DO IT FATTY!
